A Journey

network diagram

A decision-making process can be expressed as a series of connected steps. Combine journies from a group of people together and the results can be visualized as a network diagram.

Individual steps and the paths between them are sized by the number of people who took that sequence of steps at any point in their journey. Directionality is preserved because different people taking different steps at different times. They also might take the same step more than once.

The fictitious example below demonstrates prospective college students' journey to deciding to apply to a single school.

A school's website is the most-used research step before applying to a school and is often the final step

Data is only dummy data. Arrows show steps taken along the journey. Arrow width and node area are proportional to the frequency at which the step was taken.

Features:

  • Reorganize by dragging nodes
  • Release nodes by double-clicking
  • Start and end nodes naturally position themselves to the sides
  • Animated updates of new data (school size)
  • Connected links and data labels isolated on node hover
  • Arrowheads stick to node perimeter, regardless of size or position
  • Links curve clockwise to avoid overlap along bidrectional links
